WADA and Peptides: What's Banned, Why and Since When

Anyone looking for a WADA banned peptides list runs into category S0 before anything else. S0 of the World Anti-Doping Agency's Prohibited List covers every pharmacological substance not approved by any regulatory authority for human therapeutic use. It is prohibited in and out of competition, and it allows no therapeutic use exemption.

That is the point almost nobody has straight, and it is what makes this article worth reading: for an athlete under an anti-doping code, the absence of approval is not an ambiguous legal gap. It is exactly the criterion that triggers the ban.

How the Prohibited List is organized

WADA publishes a list that is updated every year and takes effect on January 1. Its basic structure:

That structure is what any WADA banned peptides list comes down to. A compound can fall into more than one category at once, and one is enough for it to be prohibited.

What category S0 actually is

S0 is a catch-all category, and it is written broadly on purpose. It covers any pharmacological substance not covered by the other sections of the list that lacks approval from any governmental regulatory authority for human therapeutic use.

Its scope expressly includes:

  • Drugs in preclinical development.
  • Drugs in clinical phases that do not yet have authorization.
  • Substances whose approval has been withdrawn.
  • Substances authorized for veterinary use only.
  • Substances labeled research use only.

That last point connects directly to the label these products carry. What is a gray area under health regulation is, under sports regulation, an explicit ban with no nuance.

S2: peptide hormones and growth factors

Some peptides never need S0, because S2 already names them. S2 covers peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances and mimetics. The section includes families such as:

  • Erythropoietin receptor agonists.
  • Growth hormone, its fragments, and GH secretagogues and releasing factors.
  • Gonadotropins, including HCG, with one particularity: the list records it as prohibited in males.
  • Growth factors that affect muscle protein synthesis, vascularization or tissue regeneration.

That last description is deliberately functional rather than nominal, precisely so it covers compounds that did not exist when it was drafted.

The practical consequence: a peptide can be prohibited under S2 (for what it does) or under S0 (for not being approved), and often under both.

Why S0 allows no therapeutic use exemptions

A therapeutic use exemption (TUE) lets an athlete use a prohibited substance when there is a documented medical need. It requires a diagnosis, the absence of a permitted alternative, and that the use confer no advantage beyond restoring a normal state of health.

That mechanism cannot apply to S0 by definition, and the reason is logical before it is regulatory: a TUE requires showing that the substance is indicated to treat a condition. A substance with no approval for human use has no approved indication for anything. There is no file on which to build the application.

Put another way: the door a TUE opens for other categories is closed here, and not out of administrative strictness, but because the key does not exist.

Detectability: what gets detected, and for how long

Precision matters more here than reassurance.

WADA-accredited laboratories use liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry, and validated methods exist for several peptide families. Detection windows vary widely with the compound, the route, the dose and the matrix analyzed (urine or blood).

Three factors people consistently underestimate:

The biological passport. It does not look for the substance. It looks for anomalous variation in biological markers over time. A profile that falls outside an athlete's own expected variability can open a proceeding even when no single test detected anything.

Long-term storage. Samples are kept for years and can be reanalyzed when new methods appear. A method that did not exist when the sample was collected can be applied later.

Metabolites. Many methods do not look for the parent molecule but for its degradation products, which can persist considerably longer.

And one warning this article states outright: we are not going to publish detection windows by compound. That information has exactly one practical use, calculating when a test can be evaded, and it is not the kind of content this site produces.

What an athlete under an anti-doping code should do

If you are subject to doping control, the framework is this:

  1. Check the Prohibited List currently in force, not an earlier version. It changes every January 1.
  2. Use your national anti-doping organization's official database to check specific substances.
  3. Assume strict liability. The code establishes that the athlete answers for whatever appears in their sample, regardless of intent, knowledge or negligence. "I didn't know" is not a defense.
  4. Be wary of supplements. Cross-contamination of dietary supplements is a documented cause of adverse findings.
  5. Ask before, not after. Your federation or your national organization has mechanisms for advance inquiries.

The operational conclusion is uncomfortable to say and admits no nuance: for an athlete under an anti-doping code, a research compound is prohibited by definition. No reading of the code gets around it.
